Building Awareness: Why We Chose Carbon Literacy Training

Sustainability is central to our business vision but before our Carbon Literacy training, awareness within our team was varied and low in some cases—many had come across the term but didn’t fully understand it nor the scale of the climate issue. The more we heard about it, the more we recognised how important it was to get to grips with Carbon Literacy for personal and business reasons.
As D360 is a relatively small team, we decided to train together as an entire organisation and selected Hattrick to deliver their Net Zero Masterclass. Here, sustainability isn’t just for Leadership, it’s fundamental to our culture so there was never any question that we wouldn’t all get involved. We set the date, organised the face-to-face session, and began our Carbon Literacy journey.

The Training Experience: Challenges and staying motivated

Taking a day out of the working week for the whole organisation is a significant commitment so everybody made sure they had a clear head going into the training as we wanted to do this properly.
The science part of the course and being shown the real scale of the problem was hard going so we appreciated the course activities and time to be able to discuss and reflect on what we’d heard. The way the course was designed and the very point of the Carbon Literacy training is to motivate people to take action and so by the end of the session everybody became genuinely excited about getting started with their assessment and pledges.
Support from Hattrick continued beyond the training and up until we submitted our assessment to ensure we could get the most from our pledges.

Impact and Ongoing Change

Since completing the training, we’ve seen our team make more conscious and sustainable choices, incorporating their Carbon Literacy pledges into everyday life – at work and at home. These commitments are now reflected in our annual appraisal process. There are some areas where we have already seen measurable benefit, e.g. steps we have taken to minimise energy consumption has meant we’ve gone from usage of 356KWH per test down to 37.26KWH per test and simply by tracking our energy usage, we now have a baseline to be able to set a reduction target going forward.
Equally, there are other areas we need to look more closely at to continue to drive long-term improvements and reduce our carbon footprint. This will involve engaging and collaborating with our supply chain to address our Scope 3 with a particular emphasis on logistics, transportation and packaging where we believe we can make significant reductions. D360 is very proud that every single employee plays an active role in driving positive environmental impact and it’s great to see the boost in morale amongst our team – every new employee will also receive the training.

“It is easy to ‘talk the talk’ but it’s more purposeful when everyone understands the issues and embraces the challenge by ‘walking the walk’. We now have the knowledge, have started to make positive changes together and feel supported to keep pushing for positive outcomes.” Farah Asemi, Company Director & CEO

Becoming a Silver Carbon Literate Organisation: A conversation with CEO Farah Asemi

Sustainability has always been at the heart of D360’s vision, but we knew that awareness alone wasn’t enough. While many of our team members understood the importance of climate action, we wanted to ensure that everyone – regardless of their role – felt equipped with the knowledge and confidence to make a tangible impact. That’s why we embarked on our Carbon Literacy journey, starting with training our entire team and then working towards becoming a Carbon Literate Organisation. Now, we’re so proud to have achieved Silver status, a milestone that reflects our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and making sustainability and Carbon Literacy an integral part of how we work.To mark this moment, we caught up with our CEO, @Farah Asemi, to chat about the organisation’s journey towards Carbon Literacy, the challenges along the way, and what’s next for Diagnostics 360.

How did you first learn about Carbon Literacy training?

We kept coming across the term ‘Carbon Literacy’ and recognised the value of structured training in this area. After some research, we discovered Hattrick’s Net Zero Masterclass, which seemed like the perfect fit for our team. The practical, engaging approach aligned with our goal of driving down our carbon footprint an active part of our company culture. Rather than simply discussing climate action, we wanted a programme that would help our team understand the climate challenges we face and give them the tools to implement real change.

What was the training process like?

We made the decision to train as an entire organisation, which was a significant but necessary commitment. The training involved a deep dive into the science of climate change, its impact on businesses (good and bad), and the practical steps we could take to reduce our emissions. While some of the content was challenging, the interactive sessions kept us engaged and motivated. It was an eye-opening experience that gave us both the knowledge and the confidence to take meaningful steps toward a lower-carbon future.

What were some of the biggest challenges in completing the training?

Taking an entire day away from our usual operations was a logistical challenge, but we knew it was essential to do this properly. The hardest part was coming to terms with the stark reality of climate change and understanding the urgency of action. However, that only reinforced why we were doing this in the first place. Seeing the facts laid out so clearly made it impossible to ignore the need for immediate and sustained action.

How did the team respond to the training?

By the end of the session, there was a real buzz within the team. Everyone was not only engaged but also eager to take action. A core part of the Carbon Literacy training is for every trainee to set individual and collective pledges, which we’ve since embedded into our annual appraisal process to ensure accountability and ongoing progress. The discussions that followed were just as valuable as the training itself, as they continue to spark further thinking and a stronger sense of shared responsibility.

Can you share some of the changes you’ve been making so far?

Our team handles numerous supplies and materials, most of which are disposed of after one use. We’ll be introducing measures to reduce this waste including the use of glass containers for sample storage, getting recyclable pipette tip boxes and refillable containers to make a big difference over everyday items. We are also addressing the volume of waste from deliveries and packaging to cut this right down. The tracker we’ve introduced logs the amount of waste so we can constantly assess how we are tracking since implementing changes

How is Diagnostics 360 planning to maintain and build on its Carbon Literacy journey?

We have developed a multi-faceted approach to sustain our momentum. Carbon Literacy training is now mandatory for all new employees, ensuring that sustainability remains central as we grow. Having trained our team at the end of 2024, we have our first new starter joining @Hattrick’s Net Zero masterclass in May. A refresher course for all team members is also scheduled for November 2025 to keep our knowledge up to date, and we’ve also introduced quarterly sustainability education targets, where each employee attends at least one sustainability-related event and shares insights with the team. By embedding Carbon Literacy into our every day, we ensure that our commitment extends beyond a single training session and becomes a continuous learning experience.

Beyond internal changes, how is D360 engaging with its supply chain?

We recognise that reducing our footprint requires collaboration beyond our own operations. That’s why our Chief Sustainability Officer and Quality Officer are actively engaging with our suppliers, educating them on Carbon Literacy and working together to identify opportunities to reduce emissions – particularly in logistics, transportation, and packaging. By engaging with external partners, we can drive meaningful change across our entire value chain.

What role do you see D360 playing in advocating for Carbon Literacy more broadly?

We want to encourage others in our industry to take this step. We’re already sharing our journey but ahead of the next Carbon Literacy Action Day, we will remind all our partners, clients, and suppliers of how the Carbon Literacy training has benefited the business through an awareness campaign. By highlighting the tangible benefits, we hope to inspire other businesses to embark on their own Carbon Literacy training. We believe that by leading by example, we can help to accelerate industry-wide adoption of more sustainable practices. Our training taught us that it only takes 20% of people to take a stand to drive large-scale change.

What advice would you give to other organisations considering Carbon Literacy training?

Start today. The training is not just about learning – it’s about taking real, meaningful action. It has transformed the way we approach sustainability, and we’ve seen firsthand how it empowers teams to contribute to real change. The sooner you invest in Carbon Literacy, the sooner you’ll see its positive impact on both your business and the planet. The key is to view it not as a box-ticking exercise but as an opportunity to create lasting change and really get your team engaged on such an important issue.

The Best Practice Show, now in its third London edition, is renowned for bringing together healthcare professionals from across London and Southern England. Held over two days from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, the event attracted an impressive footfall of approximately 2,000–2,500 attendees each day, including GPs, Clinical Directors, PCN Managers, and other key decision-makers in primary care. With over 170 exhibitors and a comprehensive CPD-accredited conference programme, the show offered a dynamic environment for networking, education, and innovation.

The event’s focus on delivering high-quality, accredited CPD content—up to 12 hours toward medical revalidation—made it a must-attend for healthcare professionals looking to stay at the forefront of general practice. For Diagnostics 360, this was a golden opportunity to engage with a highly relevant audience and showcase our bespoke diagnostic services.

Diagnostics 360’s Presence: A 3x3m Stand Packed with Impact

We were delighted to secure a 3x3m stall at the event, strategically positioned to maximize visibility and interaction with attendees. Our stand was designed to reflect our brand’s core values: innovation, reliability, and sustainability. As a UKAS-accredited laboratory based in Chiswick, London, we aimed to introduce Diagnostics 360 to the primary care community, many of whom were unfamiliar with our offerings.

Our team was on hand to demonstrate our state-of-the-art diagnostic capabilities, which span biochemistry, haematology, immunology, molecular biology, and sexual health screening. Our team also distributed informational materials and offered live demonstrations of our secure client portal, which simplifies patient registration, test booking, logistics, and result reporting. This tech-driven approach resonated with attendees, particularly those looking for efficient, reliable solutions to enhance their practice operations.

Generating Leads and Building Connections

The event was a major success in terms of lead generation and networking. With an estimated 4,000–5,000 total visitors over the two days, our stand saw a steady stream of healthcare professionals eager to learn more about how Diagnostics 360 can support their practices. We engaged with GPs, practice managers, and clinical directors, many of whom expressed interest in our bespoke services and competitive pricing. These interactions have laid the groundwork for potential partnerships with hospitals, clinics, and corporate wellness programs across London and within a 50-mile radius.

The networking opportunities at Best Practice Show were unparalleled. The event’s diverse attendee base allowed us to connect with decision-makers who are shaping the future of primary care, from PCN Managers to GP Partners. These conversations provided valuable insights into the challenges faced by general practices, such as the need for faster diagnostic results and sustainable service providers—challenges that Diagnostics 360 is uniquely positioned to address.

Aligning with Sustainability Goals

Sustainability was a key theme at Best Practice Show 2025, and Diagnostics 360 was proud to showcase our eco-friendly practices. Our recent team-wide achievement of earning Carbon Literacy Certificates through the Carbon Literacy Project resonated with attendees, many of whom were impressed by our commitment to reducing our environmental footprint. By using electric cargo bikes for sample collection and integrating sustainability into every aspect of our operations, we demonstrated that high-quality diagnostics and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand—an approach that aligns with the values of many forward-thinking healthcare professionals.

Reflections and Future Opportunities

The Best Practice Show 2025 was a resounding success for Diagnostics 360. The event not only raised our profile within the primary care community but also reinforced the importance of direct engagement with healthcare professionals. Attendees’ surprise at discovering a UKAS-accredited lab like ours in Chiswick highlighted an opportunity to further increase our visibility through targeted marketing and future event participation.

Looking ahead, we plan to build on the leads generated at the show by following up with potential clients and exploring partnerships that can expand our reach in the primary care sector.
